Subtracting with borrowing

SUBTRACTION USING BORROWINGIMG_3289.JPG

We start from the 1’s column.
So, 2 - 3, but we can’t do it.

IMG_3295.JPG

So we need to borrow from our neighbor.
Cross him out, the 3.
So we make the 3 a 2.
Then the 2 is a 12.
Then we do 12 - 3.
So 3 to get to 10 is 7IMG_3294.JPG
10 to get to 12 is 2
So 7 + 2 is 9
So 12 - 3 is 9
2 - 1 is 1
So our answer is 19

BORROW & PAYBACK

We start in the 1’s column.IMG_3299.JPG

So 2 - 3, can’t do that, so we need to make this 2 a 12 and then we pay it back straight away downstairs to our neighbor.
12 - 3 is 9.
Then it’s not 11, it’s 3 - 1 - 1.
Which is 1.
So the answer is 19.
Now I have 2 different ways of doing these take away problems and I can choose any way I like. You might find this pretty easy-

Good luck with your questions.
